EÒRPA BREXIT SPECIAL ON BBC ALBA

The United Kingdom is leaving the European Union. The UK Government wants a new trade agreement with the EU without having to comply with rules such as free movement of people.

With Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty being triggered by Prime Minister Theresa May and two years of negotiations with EU institutions ahead, many are asking where Brexit will leave them.

Since Scotland voted to remain in the European Union, the issue of Scottish independence is also being debated with renewed vigour, with First Minster Nicola Sturgeon having received backing from Holyrood for a second independence referendum. However, the UK Government has stated that negotiations could not start until Brexit is complete.

The next edition of BBC ALBA’s Eòrpa is a special Brexit debate which will be chaired by Eòrpa presenter and news reporter, Darren Laing, with a panel of experts including Arthur Cormack (remainer), Chief Executive of Fèisean nan Gaidheal and a renowned Gaelic singer and broadcaster; Bill Innes (leaver), a retired pilot, accomplished writer, broadcaster and historian; Neil Mitichison (remainer), a former European Commission representative in Scotland and broadcaster and finally Morag Munro (leaver) is a former Councillor in the Western Isles and is involved in the voluntary sector.

Throughout the studio debate, five reports will be covered giving the panel and viewers a synopsis of some of the main issues surrounding Brexit including trade, immigration, IndyRef2, the future of agriculture and fishing and finally the EU.

Produced by BBC Gàidhlig, this Eòrpa Brexit Special will be shown on BBC ALBA on Wednesday 5 April at 8.30pm.
