BBC ALBA’S HIGHLAND MIDWIVES CHARTS THE PROGRESS OF FOUR VERY SPECIAL INFANTS

A special edition of BBC ALBA’s Highland Midwives is to chart the heart-warming and emotional progress of four infants with serious health issues who featured in the series earlier this year.

At the most challenging times in the lives of these babies, BBC ALBA cameras were allowed to follow their stories and the medics who strive to put these children on course for a healthy life.

Casey from the Isle of Skye was born with a cleft lip and palate. We follow his emotional first year, and the journey of young parents Claire and James MacQueen, as Casey undergoes two major operations that will transform his features.

We witness the family travel to Edinburgh, with footage of the operation performed by consultant surgeon, Felicity Mehendale.

Nine-month-old Willow, from Ullapool, was born with a diaphragmatic hernia and had to have life-saving surgery when she was just days old. Willow has ongoing lung problems and so Mum Mairead has been dreading her first winter. Her worst fears are realised when Willow has breathing difficulties and is readmitted to hospital.

Meanwhile, Cole, from Nairn, was born three months premature and spent many weeks in hospital, but at last his mother Kirsty is delighted to get him home. We catch up with the family and witness the great pleasure in the everyday tasks, such as Kirsty taking her son out for a walk.

Finally, we meet Donald, from Inverness, was also born very premature, and has been diagnosed with Noonan Syndrome. Now a lively 4-year-old, we discover how this genetic disorder affects him.

Produced by Eyeline Media for BBC ALBA, Highland Midwives – Fight for Life is on BBC ALBA on Tuesday 27th September at 9.00pm. It will also be available to view on BBC iPlayer.

Anns a’ phrògram shònraichte uair a thìde seo, tha sinn a’ tadhal a-rithist air teaghlaichean a th’ ann an suidheachadh gu math doirbh agus na pàistean aca air a bhith a’ strì ri iomadach duilgheadas bhon latha a rugadh iad.

Tha sinn a’ faicinn an cruth-atharrachadh a tha a’ tighinn air coltas Casey às an Eilean Sgitheanach ’s e a’ dol fo lannsa dà thuras mus eil e bliadhna a dh’aois ‘son a sgoltadh na liopa ’s na chàirean a chàradh.

Ann an Inbhir Narainn tha Cole, a chaidh a bhreith tri mìosan mus robh dùil ris agus a bha ùine mhòr san ospadal. Tha a mhàthair Kirsty air a dòigh glan fhaighinn dhachaigh, ’s e na thoileachadh dhith gu faod i a thoirt a-mach air chuairt mar a thogras i.

Chaidh Dòmhnall e fhèin a bhreith nas tràithe na bu chòir - tha e ceithir a-nis ’s thathar air dèanamh a-mach gu bheil Noonan Syndrome air. Tha sinn a’ cluinntinn mun bhuaidh a th’ aig an trioblaid gineach seo air.

Tha Willow naoi mìosan. Rugadh i le sracadh na sgairt ’s chaidh i fo lannsa èiginneach ‘son a chàradh ’s gun i ach làithean a dh’aois. Chan eil i cho tapaidh ri co-aoisean ’s tha eagal air a màthair Mairead ciamar a bhios i rè a’ Gheamhraidh. Tha aobhar aice - tha Willow air ais anns an ospadal le trioblaid analach.

Mnathan-Glùine - Spàirn gu slàint’ air BBC ALBA air Dimairt 27mh latha den t-Sultain aig 9f.
