BIRTHS FILMED BY HIGHLAND MIDWIVES TO FEATURE IN NEW BBC ALBA SERIES

A new BBC ALBA series is to provide a glimpse of the remarkable work of midwives across the Highlands – and includes unique, intimate footage of labour and birth filmed by midwives themselves.

Across a new series of BBC ALBA’s Highland Midwives, we follow midwives in various locations and a variety of situations and watch as they go the extra mile to care for mothers and their impending arrivals.

With the Highland Health Board’s midwifery team in Campbeltown given permission by new mums in their area to film the very moment of birth, we follow the journey of Susanna Fee and her husband, Daniel. The couple attended hypnobirthing classes held by the midwifery team, and it was the midwives themselves who filmed Susanna giving birth to baby Saul in the inflatable pool at Campbeltown Hospital.

On the Isle of Skye, we meet young parents Claire and James MacQueen, who are delighted by the safe arrival or their son, Casey, but realise they have tough times ahead of them as their new son has a cleft lip and palate and will need complex surgery. We follow the family as they travel with Casey to Edinburgh for a five hour operation by surgeons to address the condition.

Highland Midwives also follows the progress of baby Cole, who was born 12 weeks premature to his mum, Kirsty. We monitor his progress at the Special Care Baby Unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, including his first inoculations at eight weeks post-delivery.

Meanwhile, at Point on the Isle of Lewis, we see the midwives at work as they deliver baby Noah to parents Heather and Kevin Baillie via a home water birth. Husband Kevin films the labour and subsequent birth - which takes place in their living room - on his mobile phone.

These, and other personal family stories, will be featured across six episodes of Highland Midwives.

Produced by Eyeline Media for BBC ALBA, the series starts on Thursday 10 March at 8.30 – 9.00pm. It will be repeated on the channel each week and will also be available to view on BBC iPlayer.

Tha sgioba mhnathan-glùine Bòrd Slàinte na Gàidhealtachd ann an Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain a’ faighinn cead bho na màthraichean ùra anns an sgìre an clàradh aig an dearbh àm a tha iad ri saothair-chloinne, agus bidh sinn a’ leantainn slighe Susanna Fee agus a cèile, Daniel. Chaidh an dithis gu clasaichean ‘hypnobirthing’ a bha an sgioba mhnathan-glùine a’ cumail, agus b’ iad na mnathan-glùine fhèin a chlàr Susanna ’s i a’ breith a leanabh, Saul, ann an amar ann an Ospadal Cheann Loch Cille Chiarain.

Air an Eilean Sgitheanach, tha sinn a’ coinneachadh ris na pàrantan òga Claire agus Seumas MacCuidhein, a tha air an dòigh glan le am mac, Casey, a tha air nochdadh gu sàbhailte, ach tha fhios aca gum bi amannan doirbh romhpa agus am mac ùr air a bhreith le gàg na bhil agus am bàrr a bheòil agus tha fhios aca gum bi e feumach air obair lannsa thoinnte. Tha sinn a’ leantainn an teaghlaich le Casey ’s iad a’ dèanamha air Dùn Èideann airson obair lannsa a mhaireas 5 uairean a thìde gus an suidheachadh aige a dhèanamh nas fheàrr.

Tha Mnathan-glùine cuideachd a’ leantainn mar a tha am pàiste Cola a’ faighinn air adhart. Rugadh esan 12 seachdainn tràth dha a mhàthair, Kirsty. Tha sinn a’ cumail sùil air mar a tha a’ dol dha aig Ionad Pàiste Cùraim Sònraichte aig Ospadal an Ràthaig Mhòir ann an Inbhir Nis, agus a’ faicinn na ciad bhanachdachan a bhios e a’ faighinn aig 8 seachdainean.
