Rt Rev Dr Morrison

BBC ALBA FOLLOWS RT REV DR ANGUS MORRISON’S YEAR AS THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND’S MODERATOR

The role of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland remains one of the most high-profile appointments in Scottish public life.

Now, in a unique insight into the role, BBC ALBA presents an hour-long documentary - From Minister to Moderator - following Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison as he moves from parish minister into the spotlight.

Rt Rev Dr Morrison is the first Gaelic-speaking Moderator in almost 50 years. Born in Glencoe, he was raised in Oban to parents from the Isle of Harris in the Western Isles.

The Moderator is the national figurehead of the Church of Scotland who chairs the annual General Assembly, the body of over 850 commissioners who are ministers, elders and members of the Church from all the presbyteries. He or she is an ambassador for the Church nationally and internationally for one year before being succeeded by the next Moderator.

Originally chosen as Moderator for the year 2014/2015, Rt Rev Dr Morrison unexpectedly had to withdraw from the role due to illness, making history as the first Moderator to ever withdraw from the position. After a full recovery, Angus was chosen again as Moderator for 2015/2016 and this documentary follows him throughout the busiest year of his life.

From opening the Royal National Mòd in his hometown of Oban to meeting members of the Boys’ Brigade to visiting the Scottish Parliament to meet the leaders of the political parties to being at the helm of a lifeboat, his experiences are hugely varied and colourful.

We accompany him on presbytery visits to home territory in Argyll and Lochaber and to London to make history as he addresses the Church of England’s equivalent General Assembly, the General Synod. Not only is he the first representative of the Church of Scotland to address the Synod but Angus’s address contributed to the Synod passing the Columba Declaration , which is a historic formal recognition of the relationship between both churches.

We see him take to the high seas as he takes a trip on the Pole Star, one of the Northern Lighthouse Board’s ships. Angus’s father was the skipper on the Pharos, another of the NLB’s ships, and Angus remembers his father at the helm of the ship as well as his own summers as a student spent working in the galley.

He is also passionate about the Gaelic language and we accompany him as Moderator making advances in the development of the language in the Church.

A year like no other, we see Angus’s life change beyond recognition as he travels the length of the country as Moderator.

From Minister to Moderator, produced by Caledonia TV for BBC ALBA, will be broadcast on the channel on Thursday 12 May at 9.00pm until 10.00pm. It will be repeated on Wednesday 18 May at 11.00pm and will also be available to view on BBC iPlayer.

Ann am prògram aithriseach ùr tha sinn a’ leantainn an Ollaimh Urramaich Aonghas Moireasdan, bho obair làitheil mar mhinistear coitheanail gu dreuchd aig àrd inbhe mar Mhodaràtair Eaglais na h-Alba.

Tha cha mhòr leth-cheud bliadhna on a bha Modaràtair le Gàidhlig aig Eaglais na h-Alba. Bhuineadh pàrantan Aonghais dha na Hearadh, ach rugadh e ann an Gleann Comhann, agus dh’fhàs e suas anns an t-Òban.

Ann an Eaglais na h-Alba,’s e am Modaràtair an neach as motha a tha fa chomhar a’ mhòr-shluaigh. Tha è no ì sa chathair aig an Àrd-sheanadh, cruinneachadh bhliadhnail de chòrr is ochd ceud gu leth coimiseanair – ministearan, èildearan agus buill, à clèirean na h-eaglaise air fad. Tha am Modaràtair cuideachd a’ riochdachadh na h-eaglaise gu nàiseanta agus gu eadar-nàiseanta, fad bliadhna anns an dreuchd.

Chaidh Aonghas Moireasdan a thaghadh airson dreuchd a’ Mhodaràtair airson na bliadhna 2014-15, ach b’ fheudar dha tarraing air ais chionns nach robh e gu math – a’ chiad uair a-riamh a thachair a leithid. Ach nuair a fhuair e a shlàinte air ais, chaidh a thaghadh a-rithist, airson 2015-16, agus tha am prògram seo a’ coimhead mar a chaidh dha.

Bho a bhi a’ fosgladh a’ Mhòid Nàiseanta Rìoghail san Òban, tadhal air Pàrlamaid na h-Alba agus coinneachadh ri ceannardan nam pàrtaidhean poileataigeach, gu stiùireadh bàta-teasairginn,’s iomadh seòrsa latha a chuir e seachad.

Chaidh sinn cuide ris a’ thadhal air na clèirean ann an sgìrean air an robh e eòlach, Lochabar agus Earra-Ghàidheal, agus cuideachd sìos a Lunnainn gu Àrd-sheanadh Eaglais Shasainn. Seo a’ chiad uair a-riamh a rinn riochdaire bho Eaglais na h-Alba òraid aig Seanadh Eaglais Shasainn: chuidich òraid Aonghais ris an rèite ri Aonta Chaluim Chille, aithneachadh foirmeil dhen chàirdeas eadar an dà eaglais.

Chì sinn cuideachd e a’ gabhail gu druim a’ chuain, air tè de bhàtaichean Bòrd nan Taighean Solais mu Thuath, am Pole Star. Bha athair Aonghais na sgiobair air tè dhe na bàtaichean a bha a’ frithealadh nan taighean-solais, a’ Pharos: tha deagh chuimhne aig Aonghas air athair aig an stiùir – agus e fhèin na oileanach, shìos gu h-ìosal a’ còcaireachd.

Tha àite chudthromach aig a’ Ghàidhlig ann am beatha Aonghais, agus chì sinn e a’ gabhail ceumannan gus aire thoirt thuice agus ìre a cleachdadh a’ thogail san Eaglais.

Bliadhna eu-coltach ri tè a thàinig riamh roimhpe, ag atharrachadh beatha Aonghais gu tur is e a’ siubhal na dùthcha o cheann gu ceann agus tha coltas gun chòrd e ris gu mòr.
