JIMMY ‘JINKY’ JOHNSTONE – WEE MAN, BIG HEART – FEATURE LENGTH DOCUMENTARY ON BBC ALBA

A decade on from his death, a new feature length documentary film made for BBC ALBA examines the highs and lows of a phenomenal Scottish sporting talent, Celtic legend, husband and father.

Born in a working class family in Viewpark, near Glasgow, Jimmy Johnstone was absolutely determined not to follow his father down the pits but instead to become a professional footballer. He worked tirelessly from his earliest school days to achieve this dream, playing for Celtic for many years and also playing for his country. Celtic won the European Cup in 1967 and Jimmy Johnstone was voted the greatest ever Celtic player in 2002.

His diminutive stature belied a huge personality and colossal determination, initially the drive to become a footballer competing on the international stage and later in life to overcome motor neurone disease.

This feature length documentary film draws on the personal testimony of his family - his wife Agnes, his daughters Marie and Eileen, and his son James. His grandson Jack also plays Jimmy in the dramatisations used throughout the programme.

The family provide an honest account of life with the man they loved dearly, sharing the pain caused by Jimmy’s very public drink problems, his diagnosis with motor neurone disease and his death when he was just 61.

The film also features interviews with fellow players, including several of the ‘Lisbon Lions’ team - Bertie Auld, Bobby Lennox, Tommy Gemmell, Jim Craig and Willie Henderson. Jimmy Johnstone has been produced for BBC ALBA by purpleTV and will be broadcast on Friday 30th September at 9.30pm and repeated on Saturday 1st October at 11pm.

Deich bliadhna às dèidh a bhàs, tha ‘Jimmy Johnstone’ a' dèanamh luaidh air beatha fear dheth na sàr thàlantan ann an eachdraidh spòrs na h-Alba, ag innse soirbheas is doilgheas cluicheadair ball-coise sònraichte nach tèid à cuimhne gu bràth, laoch aig sgioba Celtic, cèile agus athair a chaill a bheatha air sàilleabh tinneas motor neurone aig aois 61.

Bha Jimmy “Jinky” Johnstone na fhear de na cluicheadairean a bu tàlanta ’s a b’ iomraitiche a chunnacas a-riamh ann an Alba. Bha e air a mheas mar fhear de na cluicheadairean a b’ fheàrr air an t-saoghal agus bha luaidh air a chomasan air feadh na Roinn Eòrpa. Am fear a b’ òige de chòignear chloinne chaidh Jimmy a thogail ann am baile beag Viewpark, faisg air Glaschu. Bho fhreumhan bochda cha robh e idir airson lorgan athar a leantail sìos dha na sluic ghuail. An àite sin lean e a mhiann agus dh’obraich e gu cruaidh airson faighinn a-steach dhan sgioba aig Celtic. Thàinig am bruadar gu buil agus ann an 2002 chaidh a bhòtadh mar an cluicheadair a b’ fheàrr a-riamh ann an eachdraidh Celtic.

Bhuinnig e Cupa na h-Eòrpa còmhla ri Celtic ann an 1967 ach bha e cuideachd na charaid do Jim Baxter agus Willie Henderson a bha a’ cluich airson Rangers. ’S e caractar beòthail a bh’ ann air agus far na pàirce agus gu math tric bha e sna cinn-naidheachd, gu sònraichte faisg air deireadh a làithean cluiche an uair a thromaich e air deoch-làidir. Thàinig a bheatha gu crìoch obann an uair a chaidh innse dha ann an 2001 gun robh an tinneas Motor Neurone air, agus bhàsaich e leis an tinneas air an treas latha deug dhen Mhàrt 2006.

Tha am film aithriseach seo a’ cleachdadh fianais pearsanta bhon teaghlach aig Jimmy - a bhean Agnes, a chlann-nighean Marie agus Eileen, agus a mhac Seumas. Tha an teaghlach a’ toirt cunntas fhìrinneach de bheatha an teaghlaich còmhla ri cuideigin air an robh gaol mòr aca, ach cuideachd ag innse mun ghoirteas sna duilgheadasan a dh’adhbhraich na trioblaidean deoch-làidir aig Jimmy, an tinneas Motor Neurone agus a bhàs aig aois 61. Tha sinn cuideachd a’ cluinntinn bho chuid de na caraidean a b’ fheàrr a bh’ aig Jimmy leithid am Morair Willie Haughey agus seann chluicheadairean ball-coise - Bertie Auld, Bobby Lennox, John Clark, Jim Craig, Tommy Gemmell, John Hughes agus Willie Henderson. Tha am film cuideachd a’ cleachdadh fianais bho Jimmy Johnstone fhèin a thuilleadh air dealbhan teaghlaich is tasglann bho linn cluiche Jimmy. Tha pàirt cuideachd aig ogha Jimmy, Jack Johnstone a tha a’ cluich pàirt a sheanar anns na h-ath-chruthachaidhean dràma.

Air a riochdachadh airson BBC ALBA leis a’ chompanaidh purpleTV, tha am film air aithris leis a’ chraoladair spòrs Ailig O’Henley agus air a riochdachadh agus a stiùireadh le Margot Nic Couaig. B’ e seo an sgioba a chur ri chèile na prògraman air Jock Stein agus Jim Baxter, a choisinn duaisean Comann Telebhisean Rìoghail na h-Alba airson nam Prògraman Spòrs a b’ Fheàrr ann an 2015 agus 2016.
