OPENING YEAR OF HARRIS DISTILLERY DOCUMENTED BY BBC ALBA

A new BBC ALBA series is to provide a fascinating insight on the opening and maiden year of the acclaimed Harris distillery.

Across three programmes, we meet the people who made the dream of building a distillery on the island a reality through seven years in the planning and two years in construction to the success it has become today.

The story begins as the ‘Tarbert Ten’ - the staff of the distillery - in the Harris Hotel, present their plans and explain the ethos of the new company. After some delays in construction and the inevitable technical glitches, and several months in a temporary office, the building is complete and work begins in earnest as the opening day deadline fast approaches.

Their objective is to have Harris Gin on the shelves, ready for purchase when the distillery opens its doors to the public in September 2015.

As soon as the preliminary testing and tweaking is complete, the distillery is certified and Harris Gin goes straight into production. Hot on its heels is the distillery’s primary function, and the team work up to distilling their first Hearach whisky.

Remarkably, the Tarbert Ten share a commonality in having never been involved in the distillery business but are keen to prove that they are more than able to create a historic happening on the Isle of Harris.

The series follows key members of the Tarbet Ten on their first year of production in and around the distillery. Kenny Maclean is the head distiller and production manager and he features heavily through the three programmes with skills ranging from IT support in the early days through to distilling and cask maintenance later on. Domhnall Macleod, one of the team of four distillers, can turn his hand to anything having been in the building trade for over thirty years, even introducing Peter Kwasniewski, the distillery retail manager, originally from Poland, to the process of cutting peat, part of the whisky distilling process.

The distillery building quickly becomes a focus for the community in Tarbert, with events such as the annual Santa’s Parade which takes place through the village culminating with Santa distributing gifts in front of the peat fire in the foyer. The distillery has proven extremely popular with locals and tourists alike, with 60,000 visitors through the doors in the first year.

Whilst Harris Gin sales and distillery visitor numbers exceed all expectations, work continues on the Hearach Whisky distillate which is tweaked and finely tuned. The casks are filled weekly and then sent off site to the bonded warehouse by the sea. There they will mature for a minimum of three years, the terroir infusing its effect on the spirit, before they can be legally called Scotch whisky and bottled for consumption.

A Little Drop of Harris, a three-part series produced by Moja for BBC ALBA, will be broadcast on Saturday 31 December, Sunday 1 January and Monday 2 January at 8.30pm.

Às dèidh seachd bliadhna a’ planadh agus dà bhliadhna a’ togail àite freagarrach, tha taigh-staile na Hearadh sa chiad bhliadhna de shaothrach. Tha an t-sreath goirid tha seo a’ leantainn an ullachadh ro-làimh agus na ciad mìosan obrach de thaigh-staile na Hearadh. Tha sinn a’ faighinn cùl-eòlas na sgeòil aig toiseach an t-sreath far a bheil luchd-obrach na taigh-staile, an “Tarbert Ten” air tachartas a chur air dòigh gus innse dhan phobaill na tha nan amharc. Às dèidh dàil leis an togalach, trioblaidean teicnigeach agus mìosan ann an oifis sealach, tha an togalach deiseil agus tha an obair a’ tòiseachadh air thoiseach air an là fosglaidh. ’Se amas na companaidh gum bidh ‘Harris Gin’ air na sgeilpichean aca airson a reic mus fosgail an taigh-staile a dhorsan chun phobaill. Cho luath ’s a tha na ciad deuchainnean agus atharraichean sam bith deiseil, gheibh an taigh-staile teisteanas a bh’ air ‘Harris Gin’ gu buil. Goirid às dèidh sin thathas a’ tòiseachadh air prìomh amas na taigh-staile, uisge-beatha na Hearadh a staileadh. Chan eil eòlas staileadh aig neach sam bith san ‘Tarbert Ten’, ach le chèile, tha iad airson sealltainn gu bheil iad comasach air an gnìomhachas ùr eachdraidheil seo a thoirt gu buil anns Na Hearadh.

Tha an t-sreath a’ leantainn luchd-obrach na taigh-staile sa chiad bhliadhna de shaothrachadh. Tha Coinneamh MacIllethain, am Manaidsear Saothrachaidh, a’ nochdadh gu tric agus chì sinn na tha an lùib a chuid obrach le teicneolas, staileadh agus gleidheadh nan tocasaid uile na phàirt de dhreuchd. Tha neach-obrach eile, Dòmhnall MacLeòid, comasach a làimh a thionndaidh gu rid sam bith cuideachd le iomadach bliadhna na thogalaiche air a chùlaibh agus chan eil fiù nach do sheall e don Mhanaidsear Reic, Peter Kwasniewski às a Phòlainn, ciamar a thathas a’ buain na mònach. Tha an taigh-staile a-nise na phàirt mhòr den choimhearsnachd le iomadh tachartas a’ gabhail àite ann. Tha an taigh-staile cuideachd air còrdadh ri luchd-turais, le iomlan de 60,000 neach a’ tadhal ann sa chiad bhliadhna.

Le tòrr a bharrachd ùidh air a shealltainn ann an ‘Harris Gin’ tha staileadh an t-uisge beatha air atharrachadh gu mionaideach, tha na tocasaidean air an lìonadh agus an cur air falbh gu batharnach ri taobh na mara. Mairidh iad an sin 3 bliadhna, mus eil e a’ faighinn barantas lagha ‘Scotch Whisky’ agus an cur dha na botail. Tillidh sinn air ais chun phrògram nuair a bhios an uisge-beatha deiseil.
