BBC ALBA CELEBRATES THE TIREE ACCORDION MUSIC SCENE

The small island of Tiree on the West Coast of Scotland, with a population of just over 700, has produced many box players who have gone on to make their mark on the Scottish accordion scene.

Renowned bands including Gunna Sound, Skipinnish, Skerryvore and new up and coming band, Trail West are established West Coast ceilidh bands who all have one thing in common, they have Tiree accordion players at their heart.

BBC ALBA offers an engaging programme ‘Trusadh: Tiree – Outside the Box’ looking at the accordion music scene and tries to uncover the secret to their success.

Much of that success is down to the influence of one man, self taught box player, and island tutor, Gordon Connell, who won 'Music Tutor of the Year' at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2010.

Already with a strong, established musical heritage, Tiree's popular dance scene played its own vital part in the rise of the accordion. Gordon himself has inspired many different generations and, as we hear from some of his ex pupils throughout the programme, he changed the whole mindset of the community.

Some of the country's top box players pay tribute to the role of the mentor which is often not widely recognised. Amongst those in the programme include Donald Shaw from Capercaille, Angus MacPhail from Skipinnish, Daniel Gillespie from Skerryvore, and Phil Cunningham.

Trusadh: Tiree – Outside the Box was produced by MacTV for BBC ALBA and can be seen on Monday 11 March at 9pm and at 10pm the following evening

BBC ALBA a' dèanamh gàirdeachas ri ceòl a' bhogsa ann an Tiriodh.

'S iomadh cluicheadair bogsa bho Eilean Thiriodh a th' air cliù a chosnadh dhaibh fhèin ann an saoghal ceòl na h-Alba.

Tha seo fhèin iongantach 's gun ach beagan is 700 duine a' fuireach ann. Bho Gunna Sound, Skipinnish, & Skerryvore, gu Trail West bho chionn ghoirid - 's iad cluicheadairean bogsa Thirisdeach a th' aig cridhe gach còmhlain.

Agus tha aon duine gu sònraichte air buaidh mhòr a thoirt air cùisean. Fear a dh'ionnsaich am bogsa dha fhèin, agus a tha na shàr neach-teagaisg - Gordon Connell.

Aithnichte airson dualchas ciùil làidir, tha cho dèidheil 's a tha muinntir nan eilean air danns cuideachd air cur ri soirbheachas a' bhogsa ann an Tiriodh. Tha Gordon e fhèin air diofar ghinealaichean a bhrosnachadh, agus mar a chluinneas sinn bho chuid a chaidh a theagaisg leis, thug e atharrachadh air dòigh smaointinn na coimhearsnachd an sin.

Chaidh obair mhòr Ghordoin aithneachadh aig Duaisean Ceòl Traidiseanta na h-Alba ann an 2010 nuair a chaidh ainmeachadh mar 'Neach-teagaisg Ciùil na Bliadhna'.

Cluinnear cuideachd mu cho fìor chudromach 's a tha luchd-teagaisg, leithid Gordon, bho chuid de na cluicheadairean bogsa as fhèarr ann an Alba. Am measg an fheadhainn a tha a' gabhail pàirt - Dòmhnall Seathach bho Capercaille, Aonghas MacPhàil bho Skipinnish, Daniel Gilleasbuig bho Skerrvore, agus Phil Coinneagan.

Chaidh Trusadh: Buaidh Thiriodh – Beò air a’ Bhogsa a riochdachadh le macTV airson BBC ALBA. Chithear Trusadh: Buaidh Thiriodh – Beò air a’ Bhogsa air Diluain 11 Màrt aig 9f air BBC ALBA le ath-chraoladh air Dimàirt 12 Màrt aig 10f
