SMO FORTIETH CELEBRATION CONCERT ON BBC ALBA

The Cuirm @ Celtic series continues as Julie Fowlis presents two programmes from Celtic Connections featuring performances from the special concert staged on January 19 to mark the 40th anniversary of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

The concert was held at Glasgow’s beautiful City Halls where a host of top-class musicians with links to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary and the college’s contribution to music. The line-up for this special concert brought together some outstanding performers, all of whom have or have had very strong links with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, either as students, tutors, musicians in residence or international artists.

Once such international artist is renowned musician and composer Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Director of the Irish World Music Centre at Limerick University and supporter of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. He makes a guest appearance at the show, performing with a string section from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Niall Keegan and Sandra Joyce.

Alongside Julie, the programmes will feature a stellar cast list of singers including Christine Primrose, Margaret Stewart, Mary Anne Kennedy, and James Graham. Tunes are in the hands of the ever-popular Daimh, Fergie MacDonald and legendary fiddler Alasdair Fraser, accompanied by Natalie Haas while a mighty house band, led by Allan Henderson, reads like a who’s who of Scottish traditional music.

A cross section of the musical line up talk about Sabhal Mòr and the critical role it plays as the National Centre for the Gaelic Language, Culture and the Arts. They also pay tribute to the contribution that the institution has made to the cultural life of Scotland over these last forty years.

Margaret Cameron of BBC ALBA said “This event was tailor-made for BBC ALBA coverage, with a fantastic mix of Gaelic and traditional musical talents rarely seen together on stage but brought together by a shared respect for Sabhail Mor Ostaig. We hope our audience enjoys these highlights from the night”.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Director of Development, Fundraising and the Arts Donnie Munro, who along with Celtic Connections Festival Director Donald Shaw arranged for the event to take place, said “This concert has been a very special way to launch this important year in Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s history. That such an amazing array of talented international musicians and singers should come together in this way to celebrate and to honour the work of Sabhal Mòr is a wonderful testimony to the deep affection and respect in which it is held and, furthermore, is a recognition of the unique and special place which Sabhal Mòr occupies at the heart of Scottish cultural life”
