THE PLIGHT OF THE HOMELESS INVESTIGATED ON BBC ALBA

The lives of Scotland’s homeless are investigated in a new powerful BBC ALBA documentary offering viewers an insight into what it’s really like to be living on the streets, in a hostel, or in temporary accommodation.

Filmed in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow over the winter months of 2012/13, the ‘Gun Dachaigh: Homeless’ documentary puts a human face on this issue as we hear from those who know what it’s like to be without a home of their own. Each contributor has a different story to tell about how they came to be homeless and their efforts in getting re-housed.

In Edinburgh’s Comely Bank area a church opens its doors to the city’s homeless at Hogmanay’12. The programme features Gareth who has been living on the streets for four years after the breakdown of his relationship. He came to the church to get out of the cold and feels safer there than on the streets.

Nikki has moved to Edinburgh to build a new life for herself. She is living in temporary accommodation with her baby son TJ as she bids for a tenancy of her own.

A year ago David, from Aberdeen, was a full time carer for his mother, who had cancer. When she died, he had to leave their home, and, having nowhere to go, found himself on the streets.

Working with homeless charities including Bethany Christian Trust, Glasgow City Mission and the Grassmarket Community Project, this documentary gives a voice to the people for whom homelessness is no longer something that happens to someone else but part of their personal story.

The programme also hears from the Scottish Government’s Minister for Housing and Welfare, Margaret Burgess MSP, about the 2012 commitment pledging a home to anyone who is homeless through no fault of their own.

Produced by Eyeline Media for BBC ALBA, ‘Gun Dachaigh: Homeless’ is being broadcast on Friday 5th April at 9.00pm.

Tha Gun Dachaigh a’ cur eòlas air feadhainn a tha gun dachaigh ann an Alba gus fios fhaighinn mu cò ris a tha e dà-rìribh coltach a bhith a’ fuireach air na sràidean, ann an òstail, no ann an taigheadas eadar-amail.

Bidh feadhainn ann an Obar Dheathain, Dùn Èideann agus Glaschu ag innse dhuinn cò ris dìreach a tha e coltach a bhith gun dachaigh. Tha sgeulachd eadar-dhealaichte aig gach duine agus cluinnidh sinn na thachair a chiallaich gun robh iad gun dachaigh, agus na tha iad a’ dèanamh gus dachaigh ùr fhaighinn

’S e Oidhche Challainn 2012 a th’ ann. Ann an sgìre Comely Bank ann an Dùn Èideann, tha eaglais a’ fosgladh a dorsan do mhuinntir a’ bhaile a tha gun dachaigh. Tha Gareth air a bhith a’ fuireach air na sràidean fad ceithir bliadhna, an dèidh dha sgaradh bho a chompanach. Tha e air tighinn an seo gus fasgadh fhaighinn bhon fhuachd, agus los gu bheil e a’ faireachdainn nas sàbhailte an seo na air na sràidean.

Tha Nikki air gluasad a Dhùn Èideann airson beatha ùr a dhèanamh dhith fhèin. Tha i ann an taigheadas eadar-amail còmhla ri TJ, a mac beag, agus tha ise a’ feuchainn air gabhaltas fhaighinn dhi fhèin.

Mun àm seo an-uiridh bha David à Obar Dheathain a’ toirt cùram làn ùine dha mhàthair, air an robh aillse. Nuair a chaochal i, bha feum aige an taigh aca fhàgail, agus às aonais àite eile ri dhol, bha e air na sràidean.

Tha Urras Crìosdaidh Bhethany, Glasgow City Mission agus Pròiseact Coimhearsnachd Margaidh an Fheòir am measg nam buidhnean carthannais a tha a’ toirt taic dhaibhsan a tha gun dachaigh, agus tha am prògram aithriseach seo a’ toirt guth dhaibhsan aig nach eil mòran stòrais ’s iad ag innse an sgeulachdan fhèin air beulaibh a’ chamara.

Cluinnidh sinn cuideachd bho Mhinistear Riaghaltas na h-Alba airson Taigheadas agus Sochair, Margaret Burgess MSP, mun ghealltanas a rinn Riaghaltas na h-Alba ann an 2012: taigh a thoirt do dhuine sam bith a tha gun dachaigh cho fad ’s nach b’ iad fhèin a bu choireach airson a bhith gun dachaigh.

Air a riochdachadh le Eyeline Media airson BBC ALBA Dihaoine 9mh Giblean2013 aig 9.00f.
