ALBION ROVERS V RANGERS RAMSDENS CUP CLASH LIVE ON BBC ALBA

BBC ALBA’s exclusive coverage of the SPFL Ramsdens Challenge Cup begins this weekend with live coverage of the first round clash between Albion Rovers and Rangers.

Coverage of the match from Almondvale Stadium, Livingston, will start on Sunday at 4.00pm and will be presented by Calum Macaulay with analysis from Clyde manager Jim Duffy. Commentary will be provided by Derek MacKay and Hugh Dan MacLennan.

Sunday’s meeting kicks off the campaign for both Albion Rovers and Rangers and is the first meeting of the clubs since 1982 when they met on Scottish Cup duties, with Rangers running out 6-2 winners at Ibrox in February of the 82/83 campaign.

Obviously much has changed at the clubs since then and both teams start this season in new divisions, with Rangers moving up to the new Scottish League 1 after winning the Division 3 championship last season. Albion Rovers, however, pass the Ibrox side on the way down following relegation to the new League 2 at the end of the last campaign.

There will also be some new faces in both line-ups on Sunday, with new Albion Rovers manager James Ward signing a host of new players for the Coatbridge side, including the return of former Partick Thistle and Annan midfielder Scott Chaplain to Cliftonhill for his third spell at the club. In recent days he has been joined by Mark McGuigan, who will be on-loan from Partick Thistle until January 2014, bringing Rovers’ number of summer signings to more than 15.

Rangers have also enjoyed a busy time in the transfer market but with the Ibrox side’s registration embargo still in force until September 1, it means that manager Ally McCoist will only be able to field two of his new recruits as trialists against Rovers. That means the likes of goalkeeper Cammy Bell, midfielder Nicky Law plus strikers Jon Daly and Nicky Clark will be battling for just two places in Sunday’s squad. Other signings Richard Foster, Arnold Peralta and Steven Smith will need to wait until the registration ban is over before making their first appearances after transferring to the Light Blues from clubs outside of Scotland.

As well as the action on the pitch, we talk to Albion Rovers chairman Robert Watt and finance director Frank Meade who explain how the Ramsdens Cup tie against Rangers is a dream come true for the cash-strapped Lanarkshire club. They speak about how some of the money made from the game will be used to bolster their squad as they look for promotion to League One. Manager James Ward also sets out how he’s trying to change things at the club and put a long term strategy in place for success at Albion Rovers.

Ramsdens Cup coverage will be produced for the channel by mneTV, with BBC ALBA providing a premier sports package that also covers action from the Scottish Professional Football League, live shinty as well as live PRO12 league rugby.

BBC ALBA is a partnership service between MG ALBA and BBC Scotland to deliver high quality, distinctive home-produced programming.
