BBC ALBA has earned seven nominations at this year’s Royal Television Society (RTS) Scotland awards, at this prestigious industry event. The RTS Scotland Awards are the gold standard of achievement in the television industry, recognising excellence across a of programme making and broadcasting skills.

Last year, BBC ALBA celebrated its 10th anniversary and the nominations in seven different categories including comedy, children’s and animation acknowledge the range and excellence of the programming available on the channel.

Iseabail Mactaggart, Director of Strategy and Partnerships at MG ALBA, which operates BBC ALBA in partnership with the BBC, said:

“All of us at BBC ALBA are proud to have the quality of the channel’s programming recognised with this number of nominations. We’re proud too to work with such rich, creative talent within the Gaelic media supply sector – all of whom, those nominated and those not – constantly work to deliver the very best for BBC ALBA’s audiences. That commitment and creativity is at the heart of what makes BBC ALBA a success."

Sùlaisgeir: An t-Sealg leads the way for BBC ALBA with three nominations, including for Documentary and Specialist Factual: Science and Natural History. MacTV’s documentary has already seen success in the past year with a prize at the Chicago International Television Festival and its shortlisting for a Grierson award.

The superb craft skills which contribute to the channel’s output have also been recognised, with MacTV’s Niall Campbell and Daibhidh Martin shortlisted in the Director and Camera categories for their work on Sùlaisgeir.

Seumas Mactaggart, Head of Production and Development at MacTV, said: “Daibhidh and Niall were embedded with the group of men who were harvesting the young gannets on the isolated island of Sùlaisgeir and had to carefully plan the logistics of filming. Powering their cameras and preserving their footage proved particularly challenging. Over the two weeks they became part of the team, sleeping in the bothy and taking their turn to cook. This resulted in a unique and revealing portrait.”

Sketch comedy was a new addition to the BBC ALBA schedule last year with the new show, FUNC, from the award winning Still Game director Michael Hines. With the help of the BBC Writer’s Room to source new writing talent over one hundred new Gaelic sketches were produced for the show which proved an instant hit with the BBC ALBA audience, both on TV and on social media.

Michael Hines, from The Woven Thread, said: "I’m extremely proud that we’ve been nominated. We have a wonderful young cast, great crew and some brilliant writing. There aren’t many channels that show so much trust in programme-makers and so much commitment to up-and-coming talent and I think the show reflects that trust.”

In the Animations & VFX category, a commission commemorating the Iolaire disaster is BBC ALBA’s debut nomination for this award. Tha thu air Aigeann m’Inntinn from Am Bocsa productions is animator Catriona Black’s beautifully poignant interpretation of Britain’s worst peacetime naval disaster set to the eponymous poem by Iain Crichton Smith.

Catriona Black said: “I made the film for the people of Lewis and Harris and it was warmly received by them but it’s great to see the film being recognised on a wider scale like this.”

Buidheagain by Sobier Productions is BBC ALBA’s debut nomination in the Children’s Category. Made as part of a European Broadcasting Union initiative it sees a family of travellers struggling to protect their way of life from a nasty farmer and his egg business.

BBC ALBA has had a great track record in the Sports category, and this year purpleTV have again received a nomination, this time for their biographical documentary about the Celtic football legend Tommy Burns.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow on the 12th of June

Uighean cast

Tha BBC ALBA air ainmeachadh seachd tursan air geàrr-liosta duaisean Royal Television Society (RTS) Scotland 2019 – an àireamh as motha a fhuair an t-seanail air geàrr-liosta nan duaisean cliùiteach seo.

Tha duaisean RTS Alba a’ comharrachadh sàr-mhathas ann an gnìomhachas telebhisein thar farsaingeachd de ghnèithean phrògraman agus sgilean craolaidh.

An-uiridh, chomharraich BBC ALBA 10 bliadhna air an èadhar agus tha na prògraman air a’ gheàrr-liosta ag aithneachadh cuid de na sàr phrògraman a tha rim faighinn air an t-seanail.

Thuirt Iseabail Nic an t-Sagairt, Stiùiriche Ro-innleachd is Co-bhanntachd MG ALBA, a tha a’ ruith BBC ALBA ann an co-bhanntachd leis a’ BhBC:

“Tha sgioba BBC ALBA moiteil gun deach aithne a thoirt airson feabhas phrògraman na seanail le na tha seo de phrògraman air a’ gheàrr-liosta. Tha sinn moiteil cuideachd a bhith ag obair le leithid de thàlant ealanta san roinn chruthachail – iadsan a chaidh agus nach deach ainmeachadh airson duais – a tha cho dripeil a' lìbhrigeadh an t-susbaint as fheàrr gu maith luchd-amhairc BBC ALBA. Tha an dealas agus an cruthachas seo aig cridhe na tha a’ deanamh BBC ALBA cho soirbheachail.”

Chaidh Sùlaisgeir: An t-Sealg ainmeachadh airson trì duaisean, le roinn Prògram Aithriseach airson Saidheans agus Eachdraidh Nàdarrach nam measg. Tha prògram MacTV mu thràth air duais a bhuannachadh aig an Chicago International Television Festival agus chaidh ainmeachadh aig duaisean cliùiteach Grierson cuideachd.

Chaidh ìrean àrda sgilean ciùird sa phrògram aithneachadh cuideachd, le Niall Caimbeul agus Daibhidh Màrtainn ainmichte sna gnèithean airson Stiùiriche agus Neach-camara airson an cuid obrach air Sùlaisgeir.

Thuirt Ceannard Riochdachaidh agus Leasachaidh MacTV, Seumas Mac an t-Sagairt:

“Bha Daibhidh agus Niall aig cridhe na seilg, dlùth ri na sealgairean. Bha dùbhlain gu leòr romhpa leithid cumail cumhachd ri na camarathan agus mar a stòr iad nam filmichean aca gu dian. Bha iad mar phàirt den sgioba, a’ cadal sa bhothan agus ag ullachadh a’ bhìdh còmhla. Thug an dlùth cheangal seo dhuinn sealladh iongantach air an t-sealg”.

B’ e an comadaidh FUNC, a chaidh a stiùireadh leis an stiùiriche ainmeil Michael Hines, aon de phrìomh phrògraman BBC ALBA ann an 2018. Le taic bho BBC Writer’s Room a' trusadh sgrìobhadairean ùra chaidh còrr is 100 sgeidse a chruthachadh a chòrd gu mòr ri luchd-amhairc BBC ALBA, an dà chuid air TBh agus air na meadhanan sòisealta.

Thuirt Michael Hines: “Tha mi cho moiteil gun deach ar n-ainmeachadh. Tha cleasaichean òga agus criutha air leth againn agus sgrìobhadh mhìorbhaileach. Chan eil mòran sheanailean ann a tha a’ cur uiread de dh’earbsa ann an riochdairean phrògraman agus aig a bheil uiread de dhealas ann an tàlant ùr agus tha sinn follaiseach sa phrògram.”

Sa ghnè Beothachadh & VFX, tha prògram a’ comharrachadh call na h-Iolaire air ainmeachadh. Tha an dealbh-beò, Tha thu air Aigeann m’ Inntinn, riochdaichte le Catriona Black bhon chompanaidh Am Bocsa, a’ nochdadh sealladh air an tubaist-mara oillteil seo. Tha e air a chuir ris a’ bhàrdachd dhrùidhteach a rinn am bàrd Gàidhlig, Iain Crichton Mac a’ Ghobhainn.

Thuirt Catriona: “Rinn mi am film airson muinntir Leòdhais agus na Hearadh agus chuir iad fàilte bhlàth air, ach tha e math cuideachd a bhith ga fhaicinn a’ faighinn aithne ann an seadh nas fharsaing mar seo”.

Tha Buidheagain le Sorbier Productions air ainmeachadh ann an Gnè na Cloinne. Mar phàirt de dh’iomairt leis an Aonadh Craolaidh Eòrpach (EBU) tha e a’ toirt sùil air strì teaghlaich a tha a’ feuchainn ris an dòigh-beatha aca a dhìon bho thuathanach mhì-chàileir aig a bheil gnìomhachas uighean.

Tha an t-seanail air a bhith soirbheachail sna bliadhnaichean a dh’fhalbh sa ghnè Spòrs. Am-bliadhna tha purpleTV ainmichte aon uair eile, an turas seo airson na sgeulachd mu Tommy Burns, cluicheadair agus manaidsear ainmeil sgioba ball-coise Celtic.
