Presenters Sarah Cruickshank and Vicky Kilgour

Fèis Chiùil Thiriodh

BBC ALBA – Saturday 25 July at 9.00pm

Prepare for a musical summer as BBC ALBA brings the Tiree Music Festival (TMF) to our screens for the first time ever. Presenters Sarah Cruickshank and Vicky Kilgour will host festival highlights on BBC ALBA over two successive weekends from 25th July, with more to follow later in the year.

The Tiree Music Festival is a gem of the UK festival circuit, winning many awards, including ‘Best Small Festival in Scotland’ and has sold out every year since starting in 2010. Music fans who weren’t lucky enough to snap up tickets to the festival can soak in the sights and sounds of Tiree on BBC ALBA.

This year the line up includes indie favourites The Fratellis, We Banjo 3, local heroes Skerryvore and Trail West, Mànran, Gentlemen of Few, Skipinnish, The Chaplins and The Lowground.

Over the festival weekend, BBC ALBA will record some of the finest performances from the festival stages whilst also providing an insight into the charm and colour that makes the festival and the island so appealing. We also get a peek behind the scenes at the festival as Vicky and Sarah chat to bands and the visionary folk behind the festival.

Festival organiser, Daniel Gillespie, said: “When creating TMF back in 2010 one of our key aims was to promote the island and its culture, so to have the event and island televised for the first time is a very special moment for the festival team and all of the community on Tiree.”

Fèis Chiùil Thiriodh explores TMF and the island, revealing Tiree to be one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. Over the course of the series viewers will get a chance to explore what Tiree has to offer – stretches of white sandy beaches; world famous surf; deserted roads and miles of machair. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the island has been dubbed the ‘Hawaii of the North.’

Music is one of Tiree’s exports and it’s fitting that the first episode of Fèis Chiùil Thiriodh features Skerryvore, an act rooted on Tiree but who have a following worldwide. With The Fratellis in concert in the second programme, this new series demonstrates the wide musical bandwidth of the festival.

Fèis Chiùil Thiriodh also marks the television debuts of The Urban Teuchtars fronted by the formidable vocal talent of Kathleen MacInnes and Sineag MacIntyre and the League of Highland Gentlemen, a musical collective who describe their brand of folktronica as ‘tweed loops.’

Fèis Chiùil Thiriodh: a great way to experience the beauty of Tiree, soundtracked by traditional and Gaelic performers, contemporary Scottish rock and indie artists.

Fèis Chiùil Thiriodh is produced by Bees Nees Media for BBC ALBA and the first episode will be broadcast on Saturday 25 July at 9.00pm.
