The channel has been available on Sky and Freesat since it first launched almost five years ago, enabling satellite viewers to enjoy the channel’s unique range of high quality programme content.

In 2011 BBC ALBA was launched on Freeview channel 8 and Virgin Media 188 which increased accessibility for viewers throughout Scotland.

BBC ALBA now continues to attract on average 500,000 viewers a week, with 3.4m having tuned in online via BBC iPlayer throughout 2012.

Its new home on Sky means it will now sit alongside BBC One HD and BBC Two HD, which BBC ALBA executives believe is the right positioning for the country’s dedicated Gaelic channel.

Margaret Mary Murray, Head of Service at BBC ALBA said: “We have been extremely proud of the channel’s achievements since it was first aired almost five years ago, and enhancing its EPG positioning has been an important element of creating better awareness and accessibility for all across the country.”

BBC ALBA has been successful in attracting both Gaelic and non-Gaelic viewers, with documentaries, music and sports programmes being the most popular genres on the channel. An exciting daily schedule of children’s programmes is broadcast as well as local, national and international news and current affairs content. Programmes are produced by a range of independent production companies based across Scotland as well as from the BBC and STV.

The schedule of programmes continues to build on the current success of key strands on the channel including the Trusadh and Soillse documentary series, the popular music show Rapal TV, and the children’s show Gleusta, as well as long standing Gaelic brands such as Eòrpa and ‘Dè a-nis?’.

BBC ALBA also offers coverage of some of the country’s top music and cultural festivals throughout the year such as Celtic Connections, The Royal National Mod and Belladrum. A comprehensive sports package provides live and as-live SPL coverage, live professional rugby, and live shinty. Programmes are also broadcast for learners of Gaelic and those interested in Gaelic language and culture.

The channel platforms include:

  • • Sky 143 (UK) – from Tues 26th March
    • Freeview / You View 8 (Scotland only)
    • Virgin Media 188 (UK)
    • Freesat 110 (UK)

    • Live on BBC iPlayer (UK)
    • 10 hours of content per week available to view on demand via the BBC PC iPlayer and the BBC iPlayer on Virgin Media

As of Tuesday 26 March, viewers will now find BBC ALBA on Sky 143. Sky boxes will not have to be adjusted as the update will occur automatically and any programme or series recordings will continue. Likewise if BBC ALBA has been set as a favourite, this will also adjust automatically with the new Sky channel 143.
