BBC ALBA BRINGS A FESTIVE SPARKLE TO OUR TV SCREENS

BBC ALBA promises to light up TV screens over the Christmas and New Year season with a sparkling festive schedule of programmes for all ages.

For the younger audience, BBC ALBA will offer exclusive treats including a two-part Emmy nominated children’s animation Spike which follows the adventures of a young elf during the festive season to be broadcast on Christmas Eve and Hogmanay. A feature length film Vipo Surviving Time Island, following the adventures of Vipo, the flying dog, can be seen on Christmas Day whilst the popular The Little Prince returns for a second series to entertain children as he and his trusted friend, The Fox journey throughout the galaxy.

A feast of music is also on offer in a compelling documentary being broadcast on Christmas Eve with World renowned Celtic music band, Capercaillie as they celebrate their 30th year in the business. Capercaillie@30 offers a unique glimpse of life on tour and why their music has been embraced by audiences Worldwide.

Continuing with music, on Christmas Day we join Michelle at the Mod, a documentary following Michelle McManus’ journey to this year’s Mod in Paisley. Michelle wants to take part in the Silver Pendant, the main competition for Gaelic learners but the road to Paisley is not as straight forward as it initially seems!

Celtic and traditional Scottish music also feature in the schedule with Cuirm@Celtic offering highlights of Tim Edey and Solas’ Shamrock City Concert; Na Trads with a highlights package of unseen footage from this year’s Scots Trad Music Awards; Shinty Heroes, a two-part music documentary commemorating the centenary of the First World War; and Siubhal le Shepherd on New Years’ Eve, a delightful programme charting the career of dance music legend, Robbie Shepherd MBE.

BBC ALBA will also be offering a range of documentaries led by, Cunnart, a poignant insight into the life of bomb disposal expert, Donald MacDonald from Lewis, who has spent the past 20 years living and working in some of the world’s most troubled regions including Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and South Sudan. And on a lighter note SWAGs – shinty wives and girlfriends - takes a look at the dedicated female followers of shinty.

An Lùib nam Boireannach brings a smile to the Hogmanay schedule as we look at the history of female impersonators from Stanley Baxter to Johnny Beattie and the Two Ronnies. With comedy clips and interviews Calum MacKinnon, writer and creator of that South Uist matriarch Seasaidh Lexy, reveals just what it is that makes this genre so popular and enduring.

Viewers will also be able to see in the New Year in style with BBC ALBA’s live Hogmanay show Cèilidh na Bliadhn’ Ùire from Partick Burgh Hall in Glasgow. Popular presenters Cathy MacDonald and Kirsteen MacDonald will be joined by a host of musicians including acclaimed actress and singer Barbara Dickson, young Gaelic singer Linda MacLeod and award winning band Mànran.

Sport remains a key strand of festive viewing with ‘as-live’ action from the Scottish Premiership covering Dundee United v Ross County, Partick Thistle v Motherwell and Kilmarnock v Aberdeen.

Rugby fans are also in for a treat with live coverage from the RaboDirect PRO12 as Edinburgh take on Leinster, and all the action as Glasgow and Edinburgh battle it out at Murrayfield on Boxing Day and Scotstoun on New Year’s Day for the coveted 1872 Cup.

And a New Year treat is in store as Katie Morag will make her debut on BBC ALBA in January when the much-loved children’s series comes to our screens in Gaelic, with the delightful voice of Maia Murray Pickering (10) from Lewis in the role of Katie Morag.
