BBC ALBA unveiled its schedule of new programmes for its autumn season today (Thursday 6 September) at a launch event held at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Four years on since the launch of the channel, BBC ALBA has cemented its position within Scottish broadcasting, with a range of high quality home produced programmes appealing to audiences across the country with productions from many genres including observational documentaries, news and current affairs, entertainment and lifestyle, religion, children’s programming, music and sport.

Maggie Cunningham, chair of MG ALBA which operates the channel in partnership with the BBC, set out her vision and strategy for the development of the channel for the next four years and she was joined by programme producers and stars who feature in the new season of programmes.

Among those addressing the audience at the event were Cathy MacDonald, presenter of Sar Sgeoil: Classic Scottish Novels and Cuide Ri Cathy, Douglas Campbell, director of Lorgan Linda: Linda’s Story and Anna Signeul, manager of the Scotland women's football team.

Maggie Cunningham said: “Since BBC ALBA’s launch four years ago, the channel has gone from strength to strength. The range of high quality programming and the wider accessibility of the channel on Freeview has led to a situation where we attract around 500,000 viewers each week. This is unquestionably a very solid platform for continuing success.

“The channel now makes a significant contribution to Scottish broadcasting and all the people involved should be very proud of the results of their hard work. The challenge now is to take the channel forward and continue to make attractive programmes.

“We will need to invest to create the programming our viewers want to see but it is not a question of holding out a begging bowl and simply asking for further funding. We must engage with all the partners we work with to explore ways in which the channel offering can be enhanced.

“This new autumn season offers some excellent programmes such as Linda’s Story highlighting areas where BBC ALBA can take audiences.

“The hard work of everyone at the channel and in Scottish production companies has allowed BBC ALBA to get to the position it occupies today. The challenge now is to continue this development and we will all strive to ensure the next four years builds upon this strong platform.”

Margaret Mary Murray, Head of Service for BBC ALBA, said: “BBC ALBA has established itself as a unique channel within Scottish broadcasting and our autumn season reinforces the depth and quality of programmes being created within Scotland. Our new season presents exceptional productions across a wide span of genres including documentaries, entertainment, live sport and diverse musical performances – all of which we are certain will be popular with both Gaelic and non-Gaelic audiences.”
